The "Green Beret" launched by Chris Reeve Knife Company in 2002. The design was also hand-crafted by Bill Hassey, who has now moved to a full tang handle construction with a threaded handle shell, compared to the "pure steel" handle fixed blades originally developed by Chris. It is dedicated to U.S. Navy SEAL Neil Roberts, who was killed in the battle for Thakur Ghar in March 2002, becoming the first Special Forces soldier to die on the battlefield in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, are comprised of different groups with different geographic responsibilities. All undergo the same training to qualify as Special Forces. Based on their specific skills and language skills, they are assigned to one of the combat teams.
Special Forces Airborne Divisions (Green Berets) are stationed in countries across the Pacific from North Korea to Indonesia. The area of application of these units - more or less all the countries along the Pacific Rim - is what gives the knife its name.
The first group was trained for use in jungles, mountains and even underwater, requiring a knife that would be reliable in all environments and do it well.
The commander at the time and a sergeant major in the Special Forces Airborne Corps contacted me and asked if I could design such a knife.
I happily accepted the assignment and was invited to Special Operations Army (SFGA) Headquarters to discuss technical and operational details with the team commander, commander-in-chief, and selected Green Berets. Over the course of a full day, the Special Forces Soldiers outlined their needs and I translated that information into a workable design.
Chris and I then showed off some prototypes and the knife ultimately came from Prototype 1, which was ultimately accepted by the Special Forces Airborne Corps. This is how the Pacific Fixed Knife was born. Chris then went to great lengths to establish and maintain the highest production standards. So far, not a single blade has failed in operation.
